Happy Children

Twilight Children has been established to provide support, in the widest sense, to children who are living on the streets and other public places without adequate or apparent adult or family support. We do not wish to restrict our operation to a particular race or sex, age group or area. Our focus is to deliver quality support structure, for boys aged 8 – 18 years who have been found in major urban and inner city areas and that will continue to be our major focus of attention.

Operation Philosophy

To initially make contact with the street children of Johannesburg through the Outreach Programme and to provide them with a shelter and a place of refuge. Thereafter to encourage their participation in the Twilight Children Programme which has been established in Hillbrow, Johannesburg since 1983.

To determine the boy’s family circumstances and to encourage him to return to the care of family or guardian where possible and to provide counseling to such family or guardian if necessary.

In cases where boys are unable or unwilling to return home, to seek or provide alternative accommodation and support.

To limit as far as possible the boy’s exposure to the undesirable aspects of street life, in particular drugs, petty crime, sexual abuse and the general deterioration of his well-being which occurs by living on the street.

To re-socialise those whose behaviour has become socially unacceptable and provide a sense of self-esteem. This is seen as a precursor to any further rehabilitation.

To provide for the boy’s physical, emotional, educational, health and development needs while he is resident at the shelter.

It is not our aim to provide a permanent home to any of the boys, but rather a temporary refuge to assist as many boys as possible.

To provide vocational counseling and guidance for the older boys at the shelter in the Senior Bridging Programme. Thereafter to provide suitable training in basic life skills and for job procurements. Finally to assist in finding secure job employment and to set them up in alternative accommodation where they can become independent, productive citizens, in the community.

We found as an institution that deals with stree children there is a need to take an active pasrt in the prvention of HIV/AIDS. Tha intervention we want to have is to ,ostly concentrate on preventative programmes.

AGENTS OF CHANGE
Hence our missionis to see our shelter boys as agents of change. They are conucting workshops and seminars. Peer Counsellors who create awareness and change in this pandemic, educating the youth about patential dangers of unprotected sex.
